1- Identify and Prepare the Plastic
To ensure proper paint adhesion on plastic, identifying the type of plastic or composition is important. In our case, we mainly want to avoid confusion between faux leather and plastic, even if the difference is minimal. Plastic paints form a thin film with low elasticity once dry. It is necessary that the surface to be painted is not too soft. Faux leather is often used for seat upholstery. Do not apply plastic paint on this surface.
2- Method for Preparing Plastic for Optimal Adhesion
For perfect paint adhesion, it is absolutely necessary for the surface to be thoroughly degreased and finely sanded.
For sanding, preferably use an abrasive sponge from P320 to P800. Sponges are easier to handle than sandpaper.
Perform dry sanding in circular motions.
Then degrease the surface with acetone or isopropyl alcohol.
3- Applying an Adhesion Primer
Generally, already painted plastics do not require the use of a primer. However, we recommend always testing the paint's adhesion on a small area. If the paint does not adhere well, applying a plastic adhesion primer will be necessary.
4- Application of plastic paint
Opt for a paint specifically designed for plastics. Apply the paint in several thin coats rather than one thick coat, which will allow for even drying and adhesion.
